L’Handfasting o legamento delle mani è il rito di matrimonio della tradizione pagana protoeuropea, cioè un rito che affonda le proprie origini nelle culture dell’Antica Europa che onoravano il Divino in forma Femminile e che vivevano in società gilaniche orientate alla partnership e all’equilibrio tra i generi in una cooperazione feconda tra femminile e maschile.
L’unione d’amore veniva e viene celebrata in armonia con i ritmi e gli elementi terrestri, a contatto con la natura, circondati-e dalle persone del proprio clan, dai propri cari, è un rito attivo che richiede la consapevolezza, l’attenzione e la dedizione non solo per quel giorno, ma per tutta la propria vita per la creazione di nuove coppie e nuove famiglie con uno stile di vita che onori e rispetti Madre Terra e promuova i valori di cura, pace, amore, rispetto, sorellanza e fratellanza, equilibrio e coscienza spirituale e civile.

Dal punto di vista giuridico l’handfasting è un rituale di nozze riconosciuto agli effetti civili in alcuni Stati degli Stati Uniti, in Gran Bretagna e in Irlanda.
In tutti gli altri paesi è possibile richiedere la presenza di un officiante civile che abbia la titolarità per rendere valide le nozze legalmente.

In Italia, oltre che richiedere la presenza di una o un Celebrante della cerimonia pagana è possibile richiedere la presenza anche di un Officiante Civile del comune di residenza degli sposi, può essere il sindaco o una persona delegata dal sindaco, ed è anche possibile richiedere la delega del sindaco per qualsiasi cittadino italiano che non sia parente degli sposi, quindi anche della o del Celebrante. È importante anche informarsi su quali siano i luoghi in cui il comune permette di celebrare il matrimonio civile e di portare in loco le documentazioni ufficiali.

L’handfasting contempla anche l’unione di due persone dello stesso sesso (in questo caso, il riconoscimento legale è subordinato alla presenza negli ordinamenti giuridici degli Stati di norme sulle unioni fra generi differenti), in quanto la tradizione pagana si caratterizza per una totale apertura verso le relazioni e il focus viene dato al Sentimento d’Amore e alle motivazioni che legano la coppia.

Il centro della Cerimonia di Unione è caratterizzato dalla costruzione di un Cerchio di Celebranti, solitamente quattro celebranti che incarnano l’essenza degli Elementi: aria, fuoco, acqua e terra e che onorano gli sposi con una benedizione degli elementi; una-o o due celebranti che officiano il rito di matrimonio; e volendo altre-i quattro celebranti che incarnano gli Archetipi delle quattro fasi della vita.

Per gli sposi è possibile scegliere numerosi elementi da aggiungere alla celebrazione in modo da rendere questo momento unico e davvero costruito in base alle proprie credenze e desideri.
È possibile anche indicare in che tipo di unione si crede e che tipo di rapporto si va a celebrare, ad esempio l’unione può durare per “un anno e un giorno” e poi essere riconfermata annualmente oppure ogni dieci anni di rapporto, oppure ci si può promettere amore per tutta la vita o per tutta l’eternità, al di là della vita biologica.

Celebrate with us your pagan wedding – Handfasting

Handfasting, or the fastening of hands, is the wedding rite in the proto-European pagan tradition, a ritual rooted in the cultures of the people of Ancient Europe who honoured the Divine in her feminine form and who lived in gilanic societies centered on partnership and equality between genders in a fertile cooperation berween men and women.

The love union used to be, and is, celebrated in harmony with the rythms and the elements of the earths, in close contact with nature, surrounded by the people of one’s own clan, by one’s loved ones; it is a ritual that requires awareness, attention and dedication not just on that day but for the whole of life, for the creation of new couples and new families following a lifestyle respectful and careful towards Mother Earth and promoting the values of caring, peace, love respect, sisterhood and brotherhood, gender balance and spiritual and civil awareness.

From a legal point of view, handfasting is a wedding ritual recognize and having civil effects in some of the United States,in Great Britain and in Ireland.

In all other countries it is posible to require the attendance of a civil officer with competence to validate the marriage legally .

In Italy, besides requiring the oresence of one male or female Celebrant of the pagan ceremony, it is possible to require the presence of a Civil Officer from the town of residence of the bride and groom; it can be the mayor or a person anuthorized by the Mayor,in this case the Mayor can outhorize any Italian citizen who is not a relative of the bride and groom and consequently also not of the ceòebrant. it is also important to be informed on the locations where the Council allows the celebration of the civil wedding and to bring there all the official documentation.

Handfasting includes also the union of two people of the same sex (in this case the wedding is legally recognized only if it is celebrated in a state whose laws permit same-sex unions), as the pagan tradition is characterized by a total openness towards all kinds of relationships; the focus of the union lies in the feelings of love and the motivations that bind the couple together.

The core of the Handfasting Ceremony lies in the creation of a circle of Celebrants, usually four, who personify the essence of the Elements: air, fire, earth and water, who honor the bride and groom with a blessing of the elements; one or two celebrants who officiate the handfasting and, if required, four more celebrants who personify the archetypes of the four phases in life.

The bride and groom can also choose several elements to be added to the celebration, in order to make this event unique and really built upon their wishes and their beliefs.

It is also possible for the couple to suggest the type of union they wish for and what kind of a relationship they aim to create, for example the union can last for ‘one year and a day’ and then be confirmed every year or every ten years, or they can make a love promise to last all their lives or all eternity , beyond their biological lives.

This experience is meant for all those couples who know and practise the spirituality of the Goddess and the pagan spirituality. For those who have no knowledge about it, we provide courses and trainings for at least one year. We remind the fact that this choice involves union through a sacred rite, to which the right importance ought to be tributed. It is by no means just an ‘alternative ceremony’, it is a choice that involves you deeply.
